Colonel Anthony Waldroup

Colonel Anthony Waldroup is the Commander of the 959th Medical Group,
Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, Texas. The 959th is the third largest
medical group in the Air Force Medical Service (AFMS) with 1,640 officers,
enlisted and civilian personnel to include 306 residents and fellows embedded
in Brooke Army Medical Center. Col Waldroup also serves as Deputy
Commander for Health Readiness supporting a 483-bed facility that serves
240,000 beneficiaries and is the sole verified Level I Trauma Center in the
Department of Defense. The 959th deploys more than 100 medics a year as
the largest deployment platform in the AFMS and the largest Graduate
Medical Education site in the Department of Defense. His previous assignment
was as the MTF Director and Commander of the 71st Medical Group.
Col Waldroup was born and raised in Oklahoma. After attending medical school, he served as a family physician in
Oklahoma until he entered active duty service with the United States Air Force in 2005. Prior to entering active
duty, he served in the Oklahoma Air National Guard as a flight surgeon assigned to the 125th Fighter Squadron,
138th Fighter Wing, Tulsa Air National Guard Base, Oklahoma. He has served in deployed locations supporting
Operation NORTHERN WATCH, Operation SOUTHERN WATCH, Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, Operation IRAQI
FREEDOM and Operation DEEP FREEZE.
Colonel Waldroup is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of
Preventive Medicine in aerospace and occupational medicine. He holds a master’s degree in public health and is
an instrument rated single engine land private pilot with 872 hours as pilot in command.
