59th Medical Wing medics perform life saving procedure

Members of the Acute Lung Rescue Transport team from the 59th Medical Wing, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, perform an extra corporeal membrane oxygenation procedure on a patient in McAllen, Texas, March 10th, 2018. ECMO is a capability of the 59 MDW's Acute Lung Rescue Transport team, and enables the safe transfer of critically ill patients with severe heart and lung issues across long distances for further treatment. The ECMO transport program began at Wilford Hall Medical Center in the 1990s. At the time, ECMO capabilities were only used for neonatal care. In 2011, the program expanded to include adult patients. The 59th MDW remains the Defense Department's hub for Acute Lung Rescue Transport. (U.S. Air Force photo story by Senior Airman Keifer Bowes)
