Military population health

Mission: Plan, execute and evaluate meaningful research studies and effective behavioral interventions that support the health and wellbeing of our military members and their families.

Vision: Through shared research goals and outcomes, provide relevant behavioral interventions that are disseminable and improve the health of the force and their families.

The Office of Military Population Health is located at the Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, and is part of the Center for Population Science, at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. We are committed to conducting meaningful, healthy living research for Department of Defense personnel and delivering interventions aimed at improving the lives of Airmen and their families. Unlike civilian populations, our military community faces many unique challenges and barriers to living healthy lifestyles. MPH, manages and executes evidence based interventions focusing on heavy drinking, tobacco use and weight control. MPH staff are committed to finding the best possible intervention outcomes to increase healthy living and readiness for our military community.

MPH has a 20-year history of research collaboration with the Air Force. To date, we have successfully served over 80,000 members of the military community through various studies. MPH has research staff located on Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas; Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas; Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi; and Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas; with its headquarters located on JBSA-Lackland. All MPH programs are grant funded, by the Department of Defense and the National Institutes of Health.
