The 959th Medical Group stood-up at the San Antonio Military Medical Center, Joint Base San Antonio - Fort Sam Houston, Texas, on Nov. 16, 2012. Serving 240,000 beneficiaries and wounded warriors, the group consists of 1,540 officer, enlisted and civilian personnel to include 306 residents and fellows. As the third largest medical group in the Air Force Medical Service, the 959th MDG is integrated with more than 6,000 Army and civilian personnel supporting operations at a 425-bed facility and the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the Department of Defense.
The 959th Medical Group supports worldwide deployments and 15 critical care air transport teams, the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Transport team, and the patient isolation unit team. The group also supports the only DoD Level 4 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and only U.S. Neonatal transcontinental ECMO program. The 959th Medical Group is also the largest Graduate Medical Education site in the Department of Defense, educating and training allied health professionals across 32 disciplines.
